About Unani Unani, the word deriving from ‘Unan,’ Arabic moniker for Greece, has its origin from the old civilization. It is solidly based on the principles of the great Greek philosopher cum physician Hippocrates. Roman physician Galen has also contributed for its development in its nascent stage. Unani medicine is now one of major alternatives in medical sciences. What makes Unani unique is that it is much linked with nature and natural ways of healing.

Over the evolving period of Unani, many more scholars and physicians contributed to this form of health care. If you go through its history, you can see valuable contributions from the likes of Rhazes, Avicenna (a.k.a. Ibn Sina), Ibn Nafis, Al-Zahrawi and more. Thanks to their efforts, Unani gained more importance and it became a complete medical system.

For some people, it is Greco-Arabic medicine, while some others address it as Greek medicine and some people call it Islamic medicine. Since its introduction, Unani had been mostly spread in the world through conventional practitioners. Of now, there is a switch in the trend as many professionally trained Unani doctors have emerged out.

It is proven that most of the advertising traditional practitioners namely RMP and Hakims are not well-trained or proficient enough to prescribe medical treatment for people. So it is always good to find a trained Unani doctor to get best results.

Key Features of Unani Medicine

The central concept of Unani medicine is based on the humoral theory. As per this theory, human body consists of four humors; blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile. It also claims that everyone possess the power to maintain itself a correct balance of these humors. If you are laid up with any illness, what all Unani physicians do is to help you reclaim this balance, asserting the fact that everyone comes out to the earth with a unique and  balanced combination of humors.
It also believes firmly in the power inherent in the human body to constantly strive to overcome any disturbance within. The role of a Unani physician is only to help activate this power.

Diagnosis and Treatment

As mentioned above, in Unani medicine, health and disease alternate as per the balancing of four humors. Hence, a thorough checking of the humors of a patient is the prominent part of Unani diagnosis. Every Unani physician starts off with a careful examination of pulse of a patient to figure out which humor is dominant at the time. As part of the initial treatment, the Unani practitioner usually goes on to examine the urine and stool of the patient for forming a clear outline on the disease
Unani system also consists of a couple of therapies, focusing on different parts of the body and controlling of food intake into body. They are mainly classified into three: regimental therapy, dietotherapy and pharmacotherapy.

Regimental therapy makes the best use of various massage techniques by focusing on the reflex points in the body. Other procedures such as venesection and cupping are part of this. Regimental therapy is effective for ailments like arthritis and back-pain, in which heat, cold or suction cups are applied to the body as per requirement. For serious health disorders, Unani physicians rely on the puncturing of certain reflex areas.

Dietotherapy insists on a strict diet that will help patient regain the equilibrium of humors.  Pharmacotherapy, as its name suggests, deals with the correct usage of drugs that are produced from organic sources. Above all, while all these methods don’t yield any results, there is a prospect of healing by surgery which has its own unique and traditional ways in Unani medicine.
